On June 18, the film SNOWFLAKES IN MY YARD, which is competing for the Golden Goblet Awards at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival, held its crew meet-up.
Director Bakur Bakuradze, lead actor Giorgi Bakuradze, and producer Anna Tikhonova attended the event for discussions. Born in Georgia, Russian director Bakur Bakuradze not only directed and wrote the film but also played a role based on his own personal experiences.
The director reunited with a long-lost friend to craft the screenplay for this work.
The film portrays the friendship between two middle-aged men facing setbacks: one living in a rundown cottage in Tbilisi, Georgia, and the other a director in Moscow struggling with creative block. Their lives change after reconnecting online.
The story draws from the real-life experiences of director Bakur Bakuradze and another male lead - two childhood friends who reconnect after many years apart through social media. During this time, their experiences and paths diverged significantly. Bakur Bakuradze noted an intriguing phenomenon: “These two boys who grew up together, due to the twists of fate, left quite different life trajectories over the span of 15 years.”
During the 15 years apart, his friends faced significant life decisions and encountered various difficulties. Bakur Bakuradze himself experienced numerous bottlenecks and challenges during that time. “Our reunion this time not only allows us to reminisce about the past but also provides us with plenty of topics to discuss,” he reflected.
In reality, after reuniting with his friend, Bakur Bakuradze convinced him to embark on this film project to relieve his financial status. “He wrote the script, or rather its initial form, quite rapidly,” Bakuradze explained. “Its content took on a diary-like structure detailing daily routines such as wake-up times, bedtime, and what was eaten for lunch.” Additionally, it also covered events occurring over a span of 15 years. “The final screenplay drew partly from my friend’s diary entries and partly from my own life, albeit with some minor artistic adjustments.”
No need for a soundtrack to dramatize real experiences
A distinctive feature of this film is its almost complete lack of musical score. Bakur Bakuradze explained, “Since it’s based on real experiences, music for dramatizing isn’t needed. I aimed to faithfully depict real-life.”
Furthermore, none of the film’s main actors are professional actors. Giorgi Bakuradze, portraying a character prone to theft, remarked, “My portrayal draws heavily from childhood memories - gestures, language, mannerisms and ways of interacting with others observed in elders. I aimed to authentically recreate his entire persona based on childhood memories."
This creative approach posed challenges for producer Anna Tikhonova, who oversaw filming in both Russia and Georgia. “We split filming into two parts, navigating the logistics and cultural nuances between the teams and locations,” she explained. “Despite the challenges, we were fortunate to achieve a compelling outcome.”
During the meet-up, a journalist likened the film to the Chinese proverb “A hedge between keeps friendship green”, to which director Bakur Bakuradze agreed, stating, “True emotions often run deep, not explosive. Male friendships, in particular, often speak volumes without words.”
